In the liner notes for Aaron Shust's fourth full length album THIS IS WHAT WE BELIEVE (2011, Centricity Music) you will find these telling words: "When your whole world is suddenly shaking, you need a firm place to stand. You see what it is in your life that is stable and true and strong enough to hold you up, and you reach for that, you run to that. In a way, life becomes simpler because the distractions fall away and you find out what you really believe."
The album begins with the title track which joyously declares the following of Christ: "We believe that You are God/Born to set Your people free/Became the final sacrifice/Conquered death to bring us life." 'My Hope is in You' features beautiful strings and is a song of confident faith. It is written by April Geesbreght and is the first #1 Adult Contemporary song for Centricity Music: "My hope is in You, Lord/All the day long/I won't be shaken by drought or storm/A peace that passes understanding is my song/And I sing/My hope is in You alone." 'Your Majesty' is written with Ed Cash who produced the album. It shares the foundational truth of the Gospel: "Jesus, conqueror of sin/With the power to rise again/You're the victor over death/Savior, Holy as You are/You removed our sin as far/As the east is from the west/Jesus, King of every king/The one who reigns in majesty." 'Risen Today' features Dan Needham on drums and is a good modern Easter hymn. It has lyrics written by Charles Wesley and Aaron Shust: "Hallelujah/Fought the fight the battle won/Hallelujah/Death in vain forbid Him rise/Hallelujah/Christ has opened paradise/Hallelujah, He is risen/Hallelujah our sins have been forgiven."
'Sing of my Redeemer' makes good use of strings and rejoices in what Christ accomplished at Calvary: "I will sing/Sing of my Redeemer/With His blood/He has purchased me/On the cross/Jesus sealed my pardon/He paid the debt and set me free/I will praise my dear Redeemer/His triumphant power I'll tell/Of the victory He gives us/Over sin and death and hell/I will sing of my Redeemer/His relentless love for me." 'Never Been a Greater Love' is a wonderful ballad of one with a thankful heart, featuring Mike Alvarado on piano: "There is now no more condemnation/You've covered us with grace/There has never been a greater love, there has never been a greater love/Never a gift has been so lovely/Never a love has been so pure/I can't imagine ever finding/Somebody else who loves us more/Even though we cannot repay You/We'll give our lives in the pursuit of who You are." 'Greater is He' is radio ready and about the mighty power of God and faith in Him: "By the power of Jesus' name/Strongholds break, strongholds break/He's our fortress and our strength/God, we will trust in You/Heaven moves and darkness quakes/When we pray, when we pray/He is strong and He will save/God, we will trust in You."
'Wondrous Love' features Kari Jobe and explores the intimate nature of Christ's relationship with us: "You walked our dusty streets/Healing a world in need/You looked into the eyes/Of sinners like me/Setting us free/What wondrous love is this, what wondrous love is this/That You would lay aside Your glory for my soul." 'We are Free', written with Ed Cash, is victorious and talks of the freedom Christ has purchased for us: "It's the life and the hope that He brings/His forgiveness that leads us to sing/We are free to love/Like our God has loved/We are free to give like He gave/We are free from sin/We are free to begin/To forgive as He forgave/We are free/We are living evidence/He restores our innocence." I would like to hear Geoff Moore cover this song. The album ends on a tender sounding note with 'God so loved the World' featuring Shust on piano: "God so loved the world/That He gave His one and only Son/That anybody who believes in Him will have/Everlasting life/God so loved the world/God so loved the world/Every man and woman/ Every boy and girl."
The liner notes for THIS IS WHAT WE BELIEVE contain extensive Scripture references to go with the lyrics. Shust has hit a home run with this album. It is the best of what contemporary worship has to offer! It is fresh and alive with passion and meaning. I'm rating it 95% and recommending it to fans of Jeremy Camp, Lincoln Brewster, and Bebo Norman. For more info visit http://www.aaronshust.com/ or http://www.centricitymusic.com/.
